nz internet copyright law

Happening right at this minute is a global protest via the medium of Twitter.

Now many people have said that you can’t say much in 140 characters. This protest shows that’s not true.

Creative Freedom are leading the call for an “Internet Blackout to protest against the Guilt Upon Accusation law ‘Section 92A‘ that calls for Internet disconnection based on accusations of copyright infringement without a trial and without any evidence held up to court scrutiny. This is due to come into effect on February 28th unless immediate action is taken by the National Party.

Join thousands of New Zealanders already against this law by blacking out your Facebook photo, your websites, your Myspace pages, your Twitter account, in protest against this unjust new law that may come into effect on February 28.” http://creativefreedom.org.nz/blackout.html

And tonight as I sit at my computer with the tweets coming up, a growing number of people are blacking out their avatar. The hash tag #blackout has hit the top of the Twitter Search trends chart. I can only hope that John Key or one of his advisers has a Twitter account, before this law makes kangaroo courts legal.

Let’s see how this maps out over the next few days. Will it make a difference? Wait and see.
