You are learner. Seek answers to the puzzles of your life.” ― Lailah Gifty Akita

Cooper-Taylor Learning was founded by Carol in 2014.

Carol is a Masters qualified education and online learning professional. Her passions are:

  • engaging, online learning,
  • widening teachers’ digital horizons,
  • widening access to education, and
  • research-informed approaches.

She has 40 years experience in education. Her first interaction with a computer was with ticker tape at teacher training college in the mid 70’s but it would be 1985 before she began using technology in her own classroom. Back then this meant using a Commodore 64 hooked up to a TV, running programs she had written herself. As computers became available in classrooms she created self assessed computer quizzes for her learners. This led on to a computer “lab” where students could work in their own time as well as scheduled lessons.

Moving into the 90’s she moved a database of educational resources online enabling users to perform their own searches; this seems elementary today, but remember this was pre- the web. Towards the end of the decade Carol created one of the first handful of websites, for schools and departments, at the University of Manchester . She pioneered the use of a web repository for class handouts, access to lecturers by email and the use of discussion forums. Around this time she also began to hand hold other lecturers to experiment with the new approaches.

Moving into the 21st century afforded Carol the opportunity to lead a project to roll out Blackboard (a learning management system LMS) across the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. She also successfully implemented a staff development training programme to enhance skills in and raise awareness of online learning issues.

2002 saw a move from the UK to the university sector in New Zealand. At Lincoln University she managed the Teaching and Learning Services unit providing professional development to staff, academic support to learners, online learning support and formal evaluation of teaching. One of the projects she is particularly proud of is moving the university from an in-house LMS to Moodle, a widely used open source, learning platform.

Carol has written books, is published in academic journals, and has presented keynotes and papers at numerous conferences. She has a wide experience of managing projects, organising events and even herding cats (aka encouraging teachers to try something new <grin>)

Carol has recently moved back to the UK to be able to watch her grandson grow up. “There is nothing quite like being a nana” she says.
